What's all this about?
Peepeth writes data (Peeps, follows, account info) to the blockchain. Each transaction costs a little bit of ether, the Ethereum cryptocurrency. Think of it like buying storage online.
"Gas" is a measure of how complicated a blockchain transaction is. Signing up on Peepeth takes 82000 gas, for example. Posting takes 27500 gas. Gas is just a measure; it is priced in ether.
You can pick your gas price. Set a low gas price and your transaction will take longer. Too low and it might never get picked up.
The "Cheapest" option is best if your action isn't urgent. It'll appear on Peepeth instantly, anyway. (You'll be notified when your transaction gets confirmed).

Registering your name shows other users you've made a small investment in your Peepeth account. Others can filter out accounts who have not registered. It provides no extra functionality.
Your name is saved to the blockchain, but this cements it directly to the Peepeth smart contract.

Why sign in?
Q: Peepeth is asking me to sign in, but it looks like I already have. What's going on?
Congrats! You've saved your account to the blockchain. Peepeth can see your public Ethereum address through MetaMask, and is displaying the associated blockchain account. That's why it looks like you're signed in.
However, Peepeth.com doesn't yet know if you control your Ethereum address. Signing in proves that you do.
Q: How does sign in work?
When you click "Sign in", a MetaMask window will pop up asking you to "Sign" a message, which proves you control your address. It just takes a few clicks. No email or password are required.
Q: Does signing in let Peepeth execute blockchain transactions on my behalf?
No. It only proves to us that you control your Ethereum address. To read more about MetaMask's "sign" feature, click here.

Batch-saving
Peepeth is cheap to use because it lets you bulk-save actions to the blockchain. That means you can post and follow on Peepeth.com for free, and then save everything to the blockchain in one transaction.
Some of your actions (like Peeps and follows) are saved to Peepeth.com, but haven't been saved to the blockchain yet. To immortalize them, click "Save to blockchain", and all your outstanding actions will be written to the blockchain in a single transaction.
Peepeth lets you save 15 actions off-chain before you must save them all to the blockchain. That number may later change.

Some actions have not been saved to the blockchain yet. To lock your actions, save them to the blockchain now in a single transaction.

Peepeth lets you batch-save your actions to the blockchain for ease of use and to save on transaction fees.
Your Peeps are currently saved to IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) and on Peepeth's servers, but are not indexed on the blockchain. Saving to the blockchain will make your Peeps available to anybody with access to the Ethereum network and IPFS. Currently, readers must access your Peeps through Peepeth.com, which could be blocked or censored by third parties.
Save early and save often. The only way to provably timestamp a Peep is to record it on the blockchain. All Peeps saved in a batch must be marked with the same timestamp (although on Peepeth they will show their original creation dates). So immediately save your critical Peeps to the blockchain.

Why? Access Peepeth using different keys, potentially on different devices.
Note: This is not an address change. It simply lets you use Peepeth with an additional Ethereum address.
